A decision is made in Teams, someone creates a ticket later, a developer asks for more detail and several days disappear between discussion and delivery. GitHub in Microsoft Teams can shorten that gap, but it can also turn an informal conversation into real engineering work before everyone understands the security, cost and approval implications.

What has actually become generally available

On 28 October 2026, GitHub made its connected Copilot cloud experience generally available across supported services, including Microsoft Teams. General availability, or GA, means the core service is positioned for normal production use rather than limited preview testing.

In plain English, an authorised user can mention GitHub in a Teams conversation and ask its AI agent to investigate a problem, plan a change, update code, run tests or prepare a pull request. A pull request is the formal package developers review before proposed code is added to a business system.

The work runs in a cloud sandbox, which is an isolated GitHub-managed environment rather than an employee’s laptop. The same session can then continue in GitHub, Visual Studio Code, the Copilot desktop app or the command line without starting again.

Some connected capabilities may still have separate preview status. Copilot Memory, for example, can retain useful context between sessions but should be assessed independently before it is enabled for sensitive projects.

Why this changes more than developer productivity

This is not simply a faster way to write code. It connects the place where people discuss priorities with the tools that can change business systems.

A support manager could post a recurring customer issue in Teams. A developer could ask GitHub Copilot to investigate it, and the agent could examine the approved repository, reproduce the fault, run tests and prepare a proposed fix while the discussion is still active.

That can remove hours or days of handovers. It also means a poorly worded request, confidential screenshot or incorrect repository selection can travel further than expected.

Our earlier guide to safe GitHub Copilot adoption in Microsoft Teams covered the foundations for a controlled pilot. GA is the point where leaders should turn those foundations into a repeatable operating model.

Five governance controls to put in place first

1. Decide who can start and steer agent work

Do not treat installation of the Teams app as the approval to use every repository. Control the service at three levels: who can install the app, who receives GitHub Copilot access and which repositories those people can change.

Start with a small engineering group and low-risk repositories. Users should have only the access required for their role, while guests, contractors and broad Teams channels should be reviewed carefully.

The business outcome is reduced risk without blocking useful experimentation. You can expand access after the team demonstrates safe behaviour and measurable value.

2. Treat the Teams thread as business data

When Copilot is invoked from Teams, the conversation can become context for the agent. That context may also appear in the issues, plans or pull requests it produces.

Create a simple rule: do not invoke the agent in a thread containing passwords, access tokens, personal information, customer records or commercially sensitive documents. This matters under Australian privacy obligations and your existing data-handling policies.

Teams retention and access settings also need review. A private engineering channel is not automatically safe if former employees, external guests or unnecessary apps still have access.

3. Keep a human approval between AI work and production

An agent-generated pull request should never be treated as approved merely because the tests passed. Tests can be incomplete, and AI can make a technically valid change that does not match the business requirement.

Use GitHub repository rules to require human approval, automated security checks and successful testing before anything can merge. Changes to authentication, payments, customer data, infrastructure or security controls should require review from the responsible specialist.

GitHub can require an additional approval for pull requests created through a shared Teams conversation. Use that separation of duties rather than weakening it for convenience.

This also supports the Essential 8, the Australian Government’s cybersecurity framework that many organisations use to reduce common cyber risks. Controlled administration, application security, patching and restricted access remain important even when AI performs part of the work.

4. Control what the agent can connect to

GitHub Copilot can use extra tools and sources through Model Context Protocol, or MCP. MCP is a standard way for an AI agent to connect to approved systems, such as documentation, testing tools or work-management platforms.

Every connection increases capability, but it may also increase data exposure. Approve connectors individually, document what information they can access and avoid giving an agent production credentials when read-only test data would be enough.

The cloud sandbox provides useful isolation, but isolation does not replace identity management, secret scanning or repository permissions. Microsoft Defender and Wiz can add wider visibility across cloud workloads, while GitHub controls protect the delivery process itself.

5. Measure delivery quality and cost together

Agent activity consumes AI capacity and cloud computing resources. The relevant compute can draw from the GitHub Actions entitlement used for automated builds and testing, so unmonitored experiments may compete with existing delivery workloads.

Set budgets and alerts before scaling. Track time from request to reviewed pull request, developer review time, rejected AI changes, reopened defects, security findings and monthly usage costs.

Do not measure success by counting how many tasks the agent completed. The useful question is whether approved work reached production faster without increasing defects, security exposure or support effort.

What controlled use looks like in practice

Consider an illustrative 200-person company with eight developers supporting an online customer portal. A timeout issue is raised during a Teams operations meeting, but the current process requires someone to rewrite the discussion as a ticket after the meeting.

With controlled agent-assisted delivery, an authorised developer asks GitHub to investigate the issue in the approved portal repository. The agent creates a plan, runs tests in its isolated environment and opens a draft pull request.

The change still cannot merge until a developer reviews it, the security checks pass and the service owner confirms that the proposed behaviour meets the business requirement. The company removes a manual handover without removing accountability.

The same approach can support more advanced agent development. If your team is building business agents, our guide to secure Microsoft Foundry agent delivery explains how to maintain control across planning, testing and release.

A practical 30-day rollout plan

Week one: Select one team, two or three low-risk repositories and a named business owner.

Week two: Configure app access, Copilot policies, repository permissions, approval rules, security testing and spending limits.

Week three: Run real but contained tasks such as documentation updates, test creation and small bug fixes.

Week four: Review quality, time saved, rejected changes, incidents and cost before deciding whether to expand.

Document who owns the agent session, who reviews the output and who can approve production release. AI may perform the work, but accountability must remain with a named person.

GA should trigger governance rather than instant expansion

GitHub in Microsoft Teams can reduce handovers, preserve decision context and help engineering teams deliver routine changes faster. The organisations that benefit most will not be those that enable it everywhere first, but those that establish clear access, data, review and cost controls.

CloudPro Inc brings more than 20 years of enterprise IT experience across Microsoft 365, Azure, AI and cybersecurity.
