The backup is healthy, but your IT team must restore an entire disk or virtual machine just to retrieve a few files. What should be a routine recovery becomes hours of work, additional Azure cost and avoidable business disruption.

Azure Backup now supports item-level recovery for virtual machines using Premium SSD v2 and Ultra Disks. In plain English, your team can browse a backup and recover selected files or folders without restoring the whole server or disk.

What are Premium SSD v2 and Ultra Disks?

Premium SSD v2 and Ultra Disks are high-performance Azure storage options. They are commonly used for databases, financial systems, analytics platforms and other applications that must process large numbers of transactions quickly.

Premium SSD v2 provides a flexible balance between cost and performance. Ultra Disk is designed for the most demanding systems, where even small delays can affect customers, staff or revenue.

These disks solve performance problems, but they previously created a recovery trade-off. Azure Backup could protect virtual machines using them, yet recovering one accidentally deleted file was not as straightforward as it was with older disk types.

How item-level recovery works

Azure Backup creates recovery points, which are saved versions of a virtual machine from particular times. Item-level recovery lets an authorised administrator select one of those points, temporarily connect its disks to a recovery computer and browse the available folders.

The required files are then copied to a safe location. The original production disk is not replaced, and the running virtual machine does not need to be rolled back to an earlier state.

The capability supports Premium SSD v2 and Ultra Disks using either 512-byte or 4-KB logical sector sizes. It also supports virtual machines containing a mixture of eligible disk types, which is useful when an application uses different storage tiers for different data.

Protection for these newer disk types relies on Azure Backup’s Enhanced policy. This is the newer policy option that supports features such as several backups per day, longer local snapshot retention and newer Azure virtual machine configurations.

Why this changes the recovery conversation

1. Small mistakes no longer require large restores

Many recovery requests are not disasters. They involve a deleted spreadsheet, an overwritten configuration file or a folder that was changed incorrectly during an application update.

Restoring an entire multi-terabyte disk for a 20 MB file is inefficient. Item-level recovery gives the IT team a more proportionate response, reducing administrative effort and the risk of disrupting unrelated data.

2. Recovery time can better match the business impact

Backup plans often focus on how frequently data is copied. The more important question is how quickly the business can retrieve the specific data it needs.

Item-level recovery can shorten simple incidents because there is no need to provision a replacement virtual machine, restore a large disk and search it manually. Staff can return to work sooner, while IT avoids turning a minor request into an infrastructure project.

3. It can reduce unnecessary recovery costs

Full disk and virtual machine restores can create temporary storage, computing and engineering costs. Those costs may be justified during a serious outage, but not when the business needs three files from yesterday.

Item-level recovery does not remove the need for full recovery options. It adds a lower-cost path for smaller incidents. This should form part of a broader review of how to lower Azure backup and recovery costs without increasing risk.

4. It strengthens practical Essential 8 evidence

The Essential 8 is the Australian government’s cybersecurity framework that helps organisations reduce their exposure to common attacks. Its backup guidance is not satisfied by simply showing that backup jobs completed successfully.

Organisations need regular backups, appropriate protection from modification or deletion, and tested restoration processes. An item-level recovery test can demonstrate that common business files are genuinely recoverable by authorised people within an acceptable timeframe.

It should sit alongside broader recovery testing and tamper-resistant protection. For database workloads, our guidance on immutable Azure SQL backups for practical ransomware recovery explains why recoverability and protection from attackers must be considered together.

Where item-level recovery is not the right answer

This feature is designed for targeted recovery, not every incident. Microsoft recommends it when the total amount being recovered is 10 GB or less, with expected transfer speeds of approximately 1 GB per hour.

If ransomware has encrypted thousands of files, a database volume is corrupted or an entire server has failed, restoring individual items may be too slow. A full disk restore, replacement virtual machine or coordinated application recovery will usually be more appropriate.

Database files also require care. Copying back a database file without considering transaction consistency can create further damage. Critical databases should have an application-aware recovery plan developed with the system owner.

There are operational requirements as well. The recovery script runs for a limited period, the recovery computer needs the correct network access, and some encrypted virtual machine backup scenarios do not support file recovery. These details must be checked before an incident, not discovered during one.

A practical business scenario

Consider a 200-person professional services company running its document-processing application on an Azure virtual machine with Premium SSD v2 data disks. A faulty update overwrites a folder containing templates used by the finance team.

The application remains online, and most data is unaffected. Restoring the whole server would introduce downtime and could roll back valid work completed after the backup.

With item-level recovery, the IT team selects a recovery point from before the update, connects the backed-up volume and copies only the affected templates. The business avoids a broad rollback, finance resumes work and the recovery evidence is recorded for the next compliance review.

Five actions to take now

Identify the affected workloads. Create an inventory of virtual machines using Premium SSD v2 or Ultra Disks and record which business services depend on them.

Confirm the backup policy. Check that these virtual machines use an Enhanced Azure Backup policy with recovery frequency and retention matched to business needs.

Define the recovery paths. Document when staff should use item-level, disk-level, virtual machine or application-level recovery.

Test from a real recovery point. Recover a sample folder, record the time taken and confirm that the restored files open correctly.

Review access and audit records. Limit who can start recoveries, protect the Recovery Services vault and retain evidence of tests and recovery activity.

A green backup dashboard only confirms that a process ran. It does not prove that the right data can be restored safely within the time the business expects. Our article on turning Azure backup inventory into recovery decisions provides a useful next step.

Make recovery fit the incident

Item-level recovery for Premium SSD v2 and Ultra Disks closes an important gap. It gives organisations a faster and less disruptive option for everyday data loss while preserving full disk and virtual machine recovery for serious incidents.

The real value comes from designing these options around business priorities.
