Existing file shares may appear healthy, yet the next Azure NetApp Files volume deployment can fail because Windows domain controllers now expect more secure directory communication than the Azure connection has been configured to use.

What Azure NetApp Files does

Azure NetApp Files is Microsoft’s managed, high-performance file storage service. Businesses commonly use it for large shared file systems, virtual desktops, databases, engineering workloads and applications that need fast access to files.

It supports SMB, the file-sharing method commonly used by Windows, and NFS, which is widely used by Linux and enterprise applications. SMB, dual-protocol and some secure NFS configurations depend on an Active Directory connection to identify users and decide what they are allowed to access.

That identity connection is where LDAP becomes important.

LDAP signing in plain English

LDAP, or Lightweight Directory Access Protocol, is the method systems use to ask Active Directory questions such as “Who is this user?” and “Which groups do they belong to?”

LDAP signing adds a digital integrity check to these conversations. It helps confirm that messages came from the expected system and were not changed while travelling across the network.

Signing is not the same as encryption. LDAP signing protects the integrity of a message, while LDAP over TLS encrypts the conversation so that it cannot easily be read in transit. It is also different from SMB signing, which protects file-sharing traffic rather than Active Directory queries.

Why IT managers need to check this now

Microsoft has progressively hardened Windows Server and Active Directory. New Windows Server 2025 Active Directory deployments require LDAP signing by default, while upgraded environments can behave differently depending on their existing policies.

Microsoft’s current Azure NetApp Files guidance also warns that certain Windows updates can prevent the service from using its previous LDAP-signing fallback behaviour. If LDAP signing is not enabled on the Azure NetApp Files Active Directory connection, creating a new SMB volume may fail.

This creates an awkward operational risk. Day-to-day access to an existing share may continue, so the problem stays hidden until a new volume, capacity change, recovery exercise or project deployment is attempted.

That is exactly the wrong time to discover an identity dependency.

What can go wrong

1. New storage cannot join the domain

An Azure NetApp Files SMB volume needs to create and use a computer account in Active Directory. If the service cannot complete a signed LDAP conversation, that process can fail.

The business outcome may be a delayed application release, a failed migration or an unavailable recovery environment rather than a simple technical warning.

2. DNS problems become authentication problems

When LDAP signing is enabled, Azure NetApp Files must be able to correctly identify the domain controllers it contacts. Both forward DNS records, which convert names to IP addresses, and reverse DNS records, which convert IP addresses back to names, must be correct.

A missing reverse record can therefore look like an Azure storage fault when the real problem is an incomplete DNS configuration. Every domain controller that Azure NetApp Files can discover through the configured Active Directory site should be checked.

3. Windows Server 2025 introduces another dependency

If your organisation uses, or plans to introduce, Windows Server 2025 domain controllers, check that current cumulative updates are installed and that AES-256 is enabled in the Azure NetApp Files Active Directory connection.

AES-256 is a strong encryption method used to protect Kerberos authentication, which is how Windows systems securely prove their identity. Treat this as part of the same review rather than as a separate upgrade task.

4. A rushed fix can interrupt existing users

Changing an Azure NetApp Files Active Directory connection should not be treated like ticking a harmless security box. Some connection changes can disrupt client access, and certain settings cannot be changed after deployment.

This is another example of why security patching needs validation, not just fast deployment. Our article on why mid-market patch validation cannot be optional explains how to build that discipline without slowing every update to a crawl.

The practical checklist for your IT team

Inventory affected storage. List every Azure NetApp Files account, Active Directory connection and volume. Record whether each volume uses SMB, NFS or both.

Confirm your domain controller versions. Identify any Windows Server 2025 domain controllers and planned upgrades. Check which cumulative Windows updates have been installed.

Review the Azure connection. In the Azure portal, open each NetApp account and inspect its Active Directory connection. Confirm whether LDAP signing and AES encryption are enabled.

Validate the Active Directory site. Make sure the site configured in Azure matches the intended site in Active Directory Sites and Services. This controls which domain controllers the service can discover.

Test forward and reverse DNS. Validate name-to-address and address-to-name lookups for every relevant domain controller, not just the preferred server.

Check delegated permissions. Confirm that the account used by Azure NetApp Files can create and manage the required computer accounts in the nominated organisational unit.

Review unsigned LDAP activity. Look for Active Directory Event IDs 2887, 2888 and 2889. These can reveal systems still attempting unsigned connections.

Test before changing production. Create a test volume, complete the domain join, mount the share and confirm that user and group permissions work as expected.

Record evidence. Keep screenshots, test results, DNS checks and approved change records. This supports troubleshooting, audits and Essential 8 governance.

A simple PowerShell check can help administrators review recent LDAP-signing events on a domain controller:

Get-WinEvent -FilterHashtable @{
LogName='Directory Service'
Id=2887,2888,2889
StartTime=(Get-Date).AddDays(-7)
} | Select-Object TimeCreated, Id, Message

The Australian government’s Essential 8 cybersecurity framework does not specifically require Azure NetApp Files LDAP signing. However, it does expect disciplined patching, controlled administration and evidence that security changes have been properly implemented.

If your team is already reviewing Azure NetApp Files, combine this work with the checks in our Azure NetApp Files network features upgrade checklist. For Linux and application workloads, the NFS mount security checklist also covers the access and availability controls that are often missed before go-live.

A realistic mid-market scenario

Consider a 200-person engineering company using Azure NetApp Files for project data and virtual desktops. Existing employees can open files, so management assumes the platform is healthy.

The infrastructure team patches its domain controllers and later tries to create a new SMB volume for an urgent client project. The domain join fails because LDAP signing was required by Windows but had not been enabled on the Azure NetApp Files connection.

What should have been a one-hour storage task becomes a production escalation involving the cloud, identity, DNS and security teams. The real cost is not the configuration change. It is the delayed project, lost staff time and pressure to weaken a security control just to restore progress.

What good assurance looks like

Your CIO should not settle for “LDAP signing is probably enabled.” Ask for proof showing the affected Azure accounts, effective Windows policies, complete DNS results, successful test-volume creation and confirmed user access.

If the problem appeared immediately after domain controller patching, do not respond by disabling signing across Active Directory. Preserve the security control, collect the Azure deployment and domain controller errors, and escalate through Microsoft support if the fallback behaviour has already been affected.

CloudProInc combines more than 20 years of enterprise IT experience with practical Azure and Microsoft security work. As a Melbourne-based Microsoft Partner and Wiz Security Integrator, we help organisations assess these dependencies without turning a focused configuration review into a giant consulting project.

If you are not sure whether Windows LDAP hardening could affect your Azure NetApp Files environment, we are happy to review the connection, DNS and update readiness with you — no strings attached.

Windows LDAP hardening can block new Azure NetApp Files volumes when identity settings are incomplete.
