These repetitive tasks consume hours, create data-entry errors and are often difficult to automate because older applications do not connect cleanly with modern software.

Microsoft’s Browser Automation Tool, announced as generally available on 19 October 2026, gives Microsoft Foundry agents a managed web browser. In plain English, an AI agent can open a website, read the page, click buttons, enter information and work through a multi-step process much like an employee would.

General availability, usually shortened to GA, means the core service is ready for production use rather than being limited to experimentation. It does not mean every workflow is safe to automate or that human oversight is no longer required.

What is a browser automation agent?

Microsoft Foundry is Microsoft’s platform for building and managing AI agents. An agent is software that can understand an objective, decide what steps are required and use approved tools to complete the work.

The Browser Automation Tool gives that agent access to Playwright Workspaces, Microsoft’s managed service for running isolated web browser sessions in Azure. Instead of installing and maintaining browsers on servers, your organisation provisions a Playwright Workspace as a separate Azure resource.

During a task, the agent follows an observe-and-act cycle. It examines the current web page, selects an appropriate action, performs that action and checks the result before continuing.

This is more flexible than traditional automation built around fixed screen coordinates. The agent can respond to changing page content, pop-up windows and forms that do not always appear in exactly the same way.

Microsoft also provides Live View, which allows an authorised person to watch an active session, and Take Control, which lets that person temporarily operate the browser. These features matter when a login challenge, unusual warning or sensitive decision requires human judgement.

Why this release matters to mid-market organisations

1. It reaches systems that do not have modern connections

The best way to connect business systems is usually through an API, which is a controlled software connection designed for exchanging information. Unfortunately, many industry portals, government websites and older finance applications do not provide a suitable API.

Browser automation can act as a practical bridge. An agent might retrieve an invoice from a supplier portal, compare it with a purchase order and enter the approved information into an older finance system.

This extends the ideas covered in our guide to connecting Microsoft Foundry agents to business systems. The important difference is that the browser becomes another controlled connection option when a direct integration is unavailable.

2. It can reduce repetitive work without replacing core systems

Many mid-market organisations postpone automation because replacing a major business platform would be too expensive or disruptive. Browser agents offer another option: improve a specific process while leaving the underlying system in place.

Consider a 200-person distributor whose accounts team spends 25 hours each week downloading invoices, checking order numbers and updating a web-based finance application. Reducing that work by even 15 hours a week could return roughly 750 employee hours a year to higher-value tasks.

The business outcome is not simply “using AI”. It is faster processing, fewer typing errors and less dependence on employees remembering a long list of manual steps.

3. Agents can work across several browser-based systems

Traditional scripts are useful when a process follows the same path every time. They become fragile when pages change, information is missing or a task spans several applications.

A Foundry agent can assess what it sees and choose its next approved action. This makes browser automation useful for supplier onboarding, service desk administration, compliance evidence collection, quality assurance testing and routine employee lifecycle tasks.

Longer processes may also require an agent that can pause for approval, recover from an interruption and continue later. We discuss that architecture in Microsoft Agent Framework and durable AI agents for IT leaders.

GA does not remove the security risks

A browser agent can make mistakes, misunderstand a page or encounter malicious instructions placed on a website. If it has access to a powerful account, a small error could update the wrong record, disclose information or trigger an unwanted transaction.

The safest approach is to treat the agent like a new employee whose access must be limited and supervised. It should receive only the permissions required for its specific task, not a general administrator account.

This supports the Essential Eight, the Australian government’s cybersecurity framework for reducing common security risks, particularly its focus on restricting administrative privileges and using multi-factor authentication. Browser automation does not make an organisation Essential Eight compliant by itself.

Private website access is also an area requiring caution. The core Browser Automation Tool is GA, but Microsoft currently identifies private website browsing as a public preview capability. CIOs should distinguish between the production status of the main tool and the status of individual features before approving an internal use case.

Five controls to put in place before production

Begin with a narrow, measurable process. Choose a high-volume task with clear rules and limited consequences if the agent stops. Avoid payroll changes, bank payments and irreversible account administration as your first project.

Require approval for sensitive actions. The agent can collect information and prepare a transaction, while a person approves the final submission. Human review is particularly important for payments, personal data and changes affecting employees or customers.

Use dedicated identities and minimum access. Give each production agent its own controlled identity. Store credentials securely rather than placing usernames, passwords or customer details in prompts.

Limit where the browser can go. Define approved websites, allowed actions and blocked destinations. Do not provide unrestricted internet access simply because it is easier during development.

Record and review activity. Monitor browser sessions, agent decisions, failures and human interventions. Microsoft Defender and Wiz can help security teams monitor the wider Microsoft and Azure environment, but the business also needs an owner who reviews whether the process is producing correct outcomes.

Do not overlook Australian privacy obligations

If an agent reads or enters personal information, your organisation remains responsible for how that information is collected, used, disclosed and protected. The Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles can apply just as they do to work performed by an employee.

Before deployment, document what information the agent can see, where session data and logs are stored, who can review them and how long they are retained. A privacy impact assessment is sensible for workflows involving customer, health, financial or employee information.

You should also test for incorrect data entry and unusual page content. An agent that completes 98 per cent of tasks successfully may still create an unacceptable business risk if the remaining two per cent involve high-value transactions.

How CIOs should assess the opportunity

Start by identifying browser-based processes that consume at least ten staff hours each week. Estimate the labour cost, error rate, delay and business impact, then compare those figures with Azure consumption, implementation, monitoring and support costs.

Choose the right type of Foundry agent as well. A prompt agent offers a faster starting point, while a hosted agent provides more control over custom logic and complex workflows. Our comparison of Foundry prompt agents and hosted agents explains the practical differences.

Run a controlled pilot with test accounts and non-production data. Define success before you begin: hours saved, error reduction, turnaround time, percentage of tasks completed without intervention and number of exceptions requiring human review.

The practical CIO takeaway

Browser automation closes an important gap between AI demonstrations and useful operational work. It allows Microsoft Foundry agents to interact with the web applications many Australian organisations still rely on, even when those applications lack modern integration options.

The opportunity is real, but so is the risk. The strongest projects combine a carefully selected process, restricted access, human approval, clear monitoring and a financial measure of success.

CloudProInc brings more than 20 years of enterprise IT experience as a Microsoft Partner and Wiz Security Integrator, with hands-on expertise across Azure, Microsoft 365, Microsoft Foundry, OpenAI, Claude, Defender and Wiz.
