The problem is happening behind the scenes: since 13 October 2026, Office LTSC 2021 no longer receives Microsoft security updates, bug fixes or technical support. Every device left behind now creates a growing security and compliance gap.

What Office LTSC 2021 actually is

LTSC stands for Long-Term Servicing Channel. Office LTSC 2021 was sold as a one-time, device-based licence with a largely fixed set of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook features.

Unlike Microsoft 365 Apps, it does not continuously receive new productivity features. It uses Microsoft’s Click-to-Run installation technology, which is the system that installs and updates Office, but its security servicing was still limited to a defined support period.

Reaching end of support does not cause Office to stop opening. Employees can continue creating documents and sending email, which is precisely why unsupported installations are easy to overlook.

The difference is that newly discovered weaknesses will no longer be fixed in Office LTSC 2021. Microsoft also no longer has an obligation to resolve reliability or compatibility problems affecting the product.

Why continuing to use it is a business risk

Security weaknesses will accumulate

Office applications routinely process email attachments, spreadsheets, documents and files downloaded from the internet. That makes them attractive targets for attackers.

An unpatched Office weakness could be triggered when an employee opens what appears to be a normal invoice, résumé or supplier document. Security tools such as Microsoft Defender can reduce the danger, but they cannot make unsupported software safe indefinitely.

Essential 8 evidence becomes harder to defend

The Essential 8 is the Australian Government’s cybersecurity framework that many organisations use to demonstrate reasonable security controls. One of its core strategies is patching applications promptly, particularly commonly targeted software such as office productivity suites.

You cannot maintain a defensible patching process when the vendor has stopped producing patches. This does not automatically mean your organisation fails every audit, but it creates an exception that risk owners, customers and insurers may reasonably question.

Replacing Office should therefore form part of your wider Microsoft 365 tenant hardening roadmap, rather than being treated as a routine desktop upgrade.

Support costs usually rise over time

Unsupported software tends to become expensive gradually. Add-ins stop behaving consistently, integrations are tested against newer releases, and IT teams spend more time diagnosing problems that vendors will not support.

The apparent saving from delaying migration can quickly be consumed by service desk hours, employee downtime and emergency remediation.

Choose the right destination before buying licences

Most mid-market organisations have three practical choices. The right answer depends on how employees work, what licences you already own and whether any devices must remain isolated from cloud services.

Option 1 Move to Microsoft 365 Apps

Microsoft 365 Apps is usually the best destination for employees who use connected Windows or Mac devices. It provides supported desktop Office applications through a subscription and receives ongoing security, reliability and feature updates.

This path also provides a stronger base for cloud collaboration and Microsoft 365 Copilot. Copilot is Microsoft’s AI assistant for working with emails, meetings and documents, although buying Copilot licences should be a separate business decision rather than an automatic part of the Office migration.

For many IT teams, Monthly Enterprise Channel is a sensible update setting. It delivers Office changes on a predictable monthly schedule, giving the business time to test updates while avoiding long delays.

Option 2 Move to Office LTSC 2024

Office LTSC 2024 is the current one-time-licence alternative for devices that cannot use Microsoft 365 Apps. Typical examples include isolated production systems, laboratory computers and highly restricted environments.

It receives security and quality updates but not continuous feature updates. Its support is scheduled to end on 10 October 2029, so it should be treated as a targeted exception rather than a way to avoid future planning.

Option 3 Use a controlled mixed model

A practical outcome may be Microsoft 365 Apps for most employees and Office LTSC 2024 for a small number of restricted devices. The important word is controlled.

Every LTSC exception should have an owner, a documented reason and a future review date. Otherwise, a temporary exception can quietly become another unsupported estate.

A practical migration plan for mid-market IT teams

Step 1 Build an accurate inventory

Do not begin with licence purchasing. First identify every Office LTSC 2021 installation, including employee laptops, shared workstations, virtual desktops, meeting-room devices and computers that rarely connect to the corporate network.

Record the operating system, Office edition and 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.

Identify Project, Visio, language packs and shared-computer installations.

List important macros, templates, reporting tools and third-party add-ins.

Confirm which users already have Microsoft 365 licences that include desktop applications.

Flag devices that cannot reliably connect to the internet for activation and updates.

Microsoft Intune, which manages and secures company devices, can help discover and target managed computers. If your organisation is still heavily dependent on traditional Group Policy, our guide to Intune versus Group Policy explains where a staged management model may make sense.

Step 2 Test what could break

The main migration risk is rarely Word itself. It is usually a finance spreadsheet with a complex macro, an Outlook add-in connected to a customer system or a document management product that depends on a specific Office configuration.

Create a pilot group covering finance, operations, executives, remote workers and heavy spreadsheet users. Test their real workflows, not simply whether each application launches. Microsoft specifically recommends assessing business-critical macros, add-ins and complex documents before deployment.

Step 3 Standardise the target configuration

Decide which applications, languages, update channel and architecture will be installed. Avoid changing from 32-bit to 64-bit Office during the same rollout unless there is a clear need, because older add-ins may not support the change.

Document separate configurations for standard employees, shared computers, Project or Visio users and LTSC exceptions. This prevents one oversized installation package from being pushed to every device.

Step 4 Roll out in controlled waves

Start with IT, move to willing pilot users and then deploy by department or location. Intune or Microsoft Configuration Manager can automate installation, track success and identify devices that remain on Office LTSC 2021.

The Office Deployment Tool is Microsoft’s installation utility for controlling what is installed, which language is used and how updates are delivered. It can also remove older Click-to-Run versions during the migration, but removal settings should be tested carefully so that required Project or Visio installations are not accidentally deleted.

Step 5 Verify the result

A deployment being marked successful does not prove the migration is complete. Confirm that users can activate Office, open line-of-business documents, load required add-ins and receive updates from the intended channel.

Produce a final exception report showing every device still running Office LTSC 2021. Assign each exception an owner and remediation date, then provide management with evidence that the unsupported software has been removed or formally contained.

What this looks like in a 200-person business

Consider a 200-person professional services company with 165 managed laptops, 20 shared computers and 15 specialist devices. A rushed project might buy 200 new subscriptions and deploy one configuration everywhere.

A better assessment may find that 150 employees already have suitable Microsoft 365 licences, 30 licences need changing, 15 specialist devices require Office LTSC 2024 and five computers can be retired. The business avoids unnecessary licensing while reducing its unsupported software footprint.

The same project can also bring unmanaged devices under Intune, establish predictable Office updates and improve reporting. For organisations combining physical and cloud-based desktops, our guide to Windows 365 and Intune endpoint management explains how to reduce fragmented device administration.

Do not turn a software deadline into an emergency

Office LTSC 2021 is already outside support, but that does not justify pushing an untested replacement to every employee overnight. The fastest safe approach is a short discovery phase, focused compatibility testing and deployment in measurable waves.

CloudProInc helps Australian organisations plan and deliver these migrations with hands-on support across Microsoft 365, Intune, Windows 365 and Defender.
