Without a clear network design, teams often choose between excessive public exposure and an expensive web of firewalls, exceptions and private connections.

What Azure Databricks Serverless actually does

Azure Databricks is a platform for analysing large amounts of data, building data pipelines and supporting artificial intelligence workloads. Serverless means Databricks starts and operates the required computing capacity on demand, rather than your IT team managing clusters of virtual machines.

That reduces administration and can help projects start faster. However, the computing environment is managed by Databricks, while your storage accounts, databases and business applications usually remain inside your Azure environment.

Private networking controls how those two environments communicate. Instead of allowing traffic to reach sensitive resources through public internet addresses, approved workloads use private connections across Microsoft’s cloud network.

Databricks serverless workload
|
Network Connectivity Configuration
|
Approved private connection
|
Storage, database, API or internal service

The security gap that catches businesses out

A company may secure employee access to the Databricks workspace while overlooking the outbound data path. In plain English, users enter through a protected front door, but the platform may still reach important data through a public-facing entrance.

This does not automatically mean the data is unprotected. Encryption, authentication and platform security controls still apply. It does mean the resource has a larger exposure than many security teams, customers and auditors are comfortable accepting.

This distinction is especially important for organisations handling financial records, health information, customer details or commercially sensitive intellectual property. Private networking reduces the number of routes through which those systems can be reached.

It also supports the intent of the Essential Eight, the Australian Government’s cybersecurity framework that many organisations use to reduce common security risks. Private networking is not an Essential Eight control by itself, but it strengthens access restrictions and helps reduce unnecessary exposure.

The main technology behind private serverless networking

Azure Databricks manages serverless connectivity through a Network Connectivity Configuration, usually shortened to NCC. An NCC is an account-level set of network rules that can be shared by approved Databricks workspaces in the same Azure region.

Think of it as a controlled connection policy. It tells Databricks which private destinations serverless workloads can reach and provides a consistent model instead of requiring every data team to create its own network workaround.

For Azure services such as storage, databases and Key Vault, which protects passwords and encryption keys, the NCC can use Azure Private Link. Private Link gives a service a private network address and allows access through an approved private endpoint rather than its public address.

This same principle applies to AI platforms. Our article on securing hosted AI agents with virtual network integration explains why controlling the data path matters just as much as controlling user access.

Choose the simplest connection for each resource

Not every system needs the most complicated network architecture. The right design depends on what Databricks must reach and how sensitive that destination is.

Use Private Link for important Azure services

A direct private endpoint is usually the cleanest choice for high-value Azure resources. Common examples include data lakes, Azure SQL databases, Key Vault, AI services and storage accounts containing sensitive business information.

The business outcome is a smaller attack surface and a clearer audit trail. Security teams can show that access is limited to approved Databricks environments rather than leaving a resource broadly reachable and relying only on login controls.

Use a private gateway for broader internal access

Some workloads need to reach several systems inside an Azure virtual network, which is a private network reserved for your organisation. They may also need access to on-premises systems connected through a VPN or ExpressRoute private connection.

A private network gateway can provide a managed path into those connected networks without creating a separate private endpoint for every internal service. This can simplify larger environments, although availability, preview conditions and pricing should be checked before production use.

Use controlled firewall access where appropriate

Private Link is not always necessary for every low-risk destination. Azure network security perimeters and controlled firewall rules can provide a simpler option for some storage scenarios while keeping traffic on Microsoft’s cloud backbone.

The goal is not to make every connection identical. It is to match the control to the risk, avoiding both unnecessary exposure and unnecessary cost.

A practical implementation plan

Map the data flows. List every storage account, database, API and internal system that serverless workloads need to reach. If a destination has no clear business owner or purpose, do not connect it yet.

Classify the information. Separate public or low-risk data from customer records, financial information, employee data and intellectual property. The most sensitive destinations should receive the strongest controls first.

Create an NCC for the correct region. Attach only the workspaces that genuinely need the connection. Consider separating production and non-production environments to limit accidental access.

Add private endpoint rules. The Azure resource owner must approve each endpoint request. Confirm that the connection is established before disabling public access.

Test every workload type. Check notebooks, automated jobs, SQL warehouses, data pipelines and AI model endpoints. A successful notebook test does not prove that every serverless service can connect correctly.

Monitor cost and usage. Private endpoints and data transfer can create additional charges. Remove unused endpoints and avoid moving large datasets between Azure regions without a clear reason.

If Microsoft Fabric and Databricks are both part of the platform, network ownership should follow the same clear boundaries as data ownership. Our guide to running Fabric and Azure Databricks together provides a practical model for avoiding duplicate controls and unclear responsibilities.

What this looks like in a real business

Consider a 180-person financial services company using Databricks to analyse customer and transaction data. Its initial plan was to allow public network access to several storage accounts, restrict access by IP address and rely on usernames and permissions for protection.

That approach looked quick, but it created ongoing firewall maintenance and made security reviews difficult. Every new workspace, service or address change introduced another exception.

A simpler design used one regional NCC, private endpoints for the sensitive storage and database services, and separate production and testing access. Public access was disabled only after each workload had been tested.

The result was not just stronger security. The company reduced firewall administration, gave auditors a clearer connection map and allowed its data team to keep using serverless computing without taking responsibility for complex infrastructure.

Avoid turning private networking into a project of its own

The biggest mistake is starting with technology rather than business risk. Connecting everything privately can create more endpoints, approvals and costs than the organisation needs. Leaving everything public creates the opposite problem.

Identity controls remain essential as well. Private networking controls where a connection can travel; it does not decide whether a person should be allowed to read payroll files or export customer data. Databricks permissions, Microsoft Entra ID, which manages user identities and access, and data governance controls must work together.

The same layered approach is covered in our security best practices for Azure AI services. Networks, identities, data permissions and monitoring each address a different part of the risk.

Secure serverless without giving up simplicity

Azure Databricks Serverless can reduce infrastructure work and help data teams deliver results faster. Private networking allows businesses to keep those benefits while limiting how sensitive resources are exposed.

The practical answer is usually a small number of well-planned controls: an NCC, private endpoints for high-risk Azure services, a gateway where broader internal access is required, and clear ownership of approvals and monitoring.

CloudPro Inc brings more than 20 years of enterprise IT experience to these decisions, combining hands-on Azure, Microsoft 365, AI and cybersecurity expertise as a Microsoft Partner and Wiz Security Integrator.
