The issue is easy to miss because existing Basic volumes can continue operating normally, even though the setting is no longer supported for new or modified volumes.

That creates a dangerous false sense of security. Your storage may work today, but a future expansion, recovery exercise or network change could expose limitations at exactly the wrong time.

What Azure NetApp Files network features actually do

Azure NetApp Files is Microsoft Azure’s managed file-storage service for demanding business systems. It provides fast shared storage using SMB for Windows applications, NFS for Linux applications, or both protocols together.

Each volume sits inside a dedicated section of your Azure network called a delegated subnet. In plain English, this is a reserved network area used only by Azure NetApp Files.

The network features setting controls how that storage connects to the rest of your Azure and on-premises environment. The older Basic setting offers limited scale and connectivity, while Standard supports higher IP limits and modern Azure network controls.

Standard network features can support:

Network security groups, which act like traffic-control rules for the subnet.

User-defined routes, which determine where network traffic travels, including through security appliances.

Global virtual network peering, which connects Azure networks across regions.

Active-active VPN connectivity, which provides more resilient links to offices and data centres.

ExpressRoute FastPath, which can improve private connectivity between Azure and on-premises environments.

Since July 2026, new and modified Azure NetApp Files volumes use Standard network features. Requests that specify Basic are automatically moved to Standard. Existing Basic volumes can continue running, but Microsoft recommends upgrading them as soon as practical.

Why waiting creates business risk

This is not an emergency shutdown notice. Your Basic volumes are unlikely to stop working simply because the setting is now unsupported.

The risk appears when the business needs to change something. You may need to add a volume, restore data, connect another Azure network, improve security controls or increase the number of systems accessing the storage.

A legacy network setting can then delay a project or complicate disaster recovery. For a system holding finance data, project files, virtual desktops or application data, that delay quickly becomes a business continuity problem.

Your Azure NetApp Files upgrade checklist

1. Find every volume still using Basic features

Start with a complete inventory across every Azure subscription, region and resource group. Do not rely on the knowledge of one administrator or assume that development subscriptions are harmless.

Record the volume name, protocol, business owner, applications using it, delegated subnet and current network feature setting. Also record whether the volume participates in backup, cross-region replication or another recovery arrangement.

Azure Resource Graph can help your team locate and review volumes at scale:

resources
| where type =~ 'microsoft.netapp/netappaccounts/capacitypools/volumes'
| project subscriptionId,
resourceGroup,
volume=name,
configuredNetworkFeatures=tostring,
effectiveNetworkFeatures=tostring,
subnetId=tostring
| order by subscriptionId, resourceGroup, volume

The important distinction is between the configured and effective settings. After an upgrade, confirm that the effective setting has become Standard rather than assuming the submitted change was completed successfully.

2. Identify every affected network sibling

An Azure NetApp Files upgrade may affect more than the volume selected in the portal. Volumes that share networking resources are grouped into a network sibling set, and every volume in that set must use the same network feature setting.

This means a change presented as a single-volume task can have a wider operational scope. Before approval, review the affected sibling list and identify the owner and importance of every volume shown.

Place a temporary freeze on creating volumes in the affected sibling set during the change. The upgrade is non-disruptive, but it is expected to take at least 15 minutes and volume creation is restricted while it is running.

3. Review routing, security rules and identity dependencies

Standard features make network security groups and user-defined routes available. However, an existing rule can become a problem if it blocks traffic that Azure NetApp Files needs.

For SMB volumes, confirm that the storage can still reach your DNS servers and Active Directory domain controllers, which authenticate employees and applications. For NFS volumes, check allowed client networks, name resolution, mount paths and application dependencies.

If traffic passes through Azure Firewall or another security appliance, confirm that return routes are correct. A one-way connection can look healthy in a diagram while file access fails in production.

The delegated Azure NetApp Files subnet must also remain IPv4-only. If your broader network is moving towards IPv6, include this dependency in the planning covered by our Azure Firewall IPv6 readiness checklist.

4. Prepare a controlled change plan

Even though Microsoft supports a no-downtime upgrade, treat it as a production network change. Schedule it outside your busiest period, notify application owners and define clear validation steps.

Your change record should include:

The network sibling set and every affected volume.

The applications, users and servers connecting to those volumes.

Current DNS, routing, firewall and security group settings.

Recent snapshot and backup status.

Expected completion time and escalation contacts.

Tests for SMB, NFS, identity, backup and replication.

Do not treat a recent snapshot as proof that recovery works. Test the recovery path separately, especially where automation or infrastructure templates still request Basic features.

5. Upgrade and validate the effective setting

In the Azure portal, open an affected volume, edit its network features and select Standard. Review the displayed sibling volumes carefully before confirming the operation.

Monitor the change until Azure reports completion. Then verify that both the configured and effective network features show Standard for every affected volume.

Complete practical tests from the systems that actually use the storage:

Mount or reconnect to each SMB and NFS share.

Create, read, change and delete a test file.

Confirm user and service-account authentication.

Run a representative business application workflow.

Check latency, throughput and error monitoring.

Verify backup, snapshot and replication jobs.

For NFS-based applications, extend the review using our NFS mount security checks. The same principles of restricted access, monitoring and recovery testing apply beyond Azure Container Apps.

A common risk scenario

Consider a 200-person engineering business using SMB volumes for project files and NFS volumes for rendering workloads. An administrator selects a low-profile NFS volume for the upgrade, not realising that it shares a network sibling set with the production project-file volume.

An existing route sends storage traffic through a security appliance, but the required path to the company’s domain controllers has not been allowed. The storage remains online, yet employees cannot authenticate to the project share.

The upgrade itself did not cause an outage. The incomplete dependency review did.

Mapping the sibling set, testing identity traffic and validating from real client systems turns that surprise into a controlled change. That protects employee productivity and avoids an urgent rollback discussion during business hours.

Use Standard as a security improvement, not just a checkbox

Once the upgrade is complete, review who genuinely needs network access to each volume. Standard features provide stronger control, but only if security rules and routes are deliberately designed.

These controls can support Essential 8 alignment, the Australian government’s cybersecurity framework, by improving network separation, administrative control and audit evidence. They do not make an environment compliant on their own, but they remove a legacy limitation that can hold security improvements back.

The business outcome is straightforward: fewer unsupported dependencies, lower change risk and a network design that can grow without an emergency rebuild.

Plan the change before the next urgent request

Basic volumes may still be running, but waiting until a migration, recovery event or security project forces the upgrade gives your team less time to assess the impact. Inventory the environment now, group volumes by sibling set and move them through a controlled change process.

CloudProInc combines more than 20 years of enterprise IT experience with hands-on Azure and cybersecurity delivery. As a Melbourne-based Microsoft Partner and Wiz Security Integrator, we help organisations review storage, networking and security together rather than treating them as separate projects.

If you are unsure which Azure NetApp Files volumes are still using Basic features, or whether an upgrade could affect a critical application, we are happy to take a practical look at your environment — no strings attached.

Basic network features now leave Azure NetApp Files environments on a legacy setting.
