After the retirement date, the old containerised connector agent will be permanently disabled and will stop sending SAP logs to Sentinel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your dashboards may still load and your security rules may remain enabled. However, without fresh data, they can create a dangerous impression that SAP is still being monitored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is actually being retired?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Microsoft Sentinel is Microsoft\u2019s cloud-based security monitoring platform. It brings together activity records from systems such as SAP, Microsoft 365, Azure and security products, then uses rules and automation to identify suspicious behaviour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To monitor SAP, Sentinel needs a data connector. This is the technology that collects SAP security logs and delivers them to the Sentinel workspace used by your security operations team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The retiring connector uses a containerised agent. In plain English, organisations run a small, dedicated software collector on a virtual machine, physical server or Kubernetes environment. That collector connects to SAP, retrieves logs and sends them to Sentinel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Microsoft is retiring that collector, not the overall Sentinel solution for SAP. The built-in detections, dashboards, investigation tools and automated response processes can continue to operate after migration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How the new agentless connector works<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The replacement is called the Microsoft Sentinel agentless data connector for SAP. \u201cAgentless\u201d does not mean that no supporting technology is required. It means you no longer need to host and maintain Microsoft\u2019s containerised collector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new design uses SAP Cloud Connector and SAP Integration Suite. SAP Cloud Connector provides a controlled connection to SAP systems, while SAP Integration Suite retrieves and routes the required security information to Microsoft Sentinel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The logs then enter the organisation\u2019s Sentinel workspace, where analytics rules can detect issues such as suspicious sign-ins, sensitive configuration changes, unusual transactions or changes to powerful user accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The approach supports SAP NetWeaver-based environments with SAP_BASIS 750 or later, including common S\/4HANA, ECC and Business Warehouse deployments. Compatibility still needs to be confirmed for every system in your landscape rather than assumed from the headline version number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why waiting until the deadline is risky<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not a connector you should replace during a rushed maintenance window. SAP security monitoring often crosses several teams, including security operations, Azure, networking, identity and SAP BASIS administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Waiting creates four avoidable business risks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>A monitoring gap.<\/strong> Security teams may lose the records needed to detect or investigate unauthorised SAP activity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Unproven incident response.<\/strong> Alerts may arrive, but automated actions, ticket creation and escalation processes may not behave as expected with the new data path.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Compliance evidence gaps.<\/strong> Missing audit records can make it harder to demonstrate that important systems were continuously monitored.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Unexpected costs.<\/strong> Poorly chosen polling intervals can increase SAP Integration Suite message volumes, while sending unnecessary data to Sentinel can increase ingestion and retention charges.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Australian organisations, reliable monitoring also supports the detection and response objectives behind the Essential Eight, the Australian Government\u2019s cybersecurity framework. The connector does not make a business compliant by itself, but losing SAP visibility can weaken the evidence supporting incident detection, access control and audit processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A practical migration plan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Confirm whether you are affected<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Start by identifying every SAP system ID, or SID, currently monitored through the containerised agent. Record where the collector runs, which logs it retrieves, who maintains it and which Sentinel workspace receives the data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not limit the review to production. Development and test systems may contain copied business data, powerful accounts or integration credentials that attackers can use to reach production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Review prerequisites and ownership<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agentless connector requires cooperation between the SAP and Microsoft environments. Confirm that SAP Cloud Connector and SAP Integration Suite are available, correctly licensed and sized for the expected workload.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your SAP BASIS team will normally create a dedicated system account and apply the required Sentinel reader role. Your Azure security team will need appropriate permissions to deploy the Sentinel solution, data collection resources and Microsoft Entra application registration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is also the right time to check whether SAP security auditing is properly enabled. Migrating a connector will not help if the source system is not recording the events your security team needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Map custom content before changing anything<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Microsoft has designed the agentless connector to preserve existing Sentinel analytics rules, workbooks and playbooks for the main use cases. That does not remove the need to test custom content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Document any custom queries, dashboards, alert rules, watchlists, data exports and automated responses. Pay particular attention to anything that reads a raw table directly instead of using the supported SAP functions supplied with the Sentinel solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also confirm whether you collect additional database, operating system or custom SAP logs. Some sources may require a separate collection method rather than being automatically covered by the agentless connector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Run both connectors side by side<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The safest approach is to deploy the agentless connector while the existing containerised agent is still operating. This allows your team to compare the two data paths without accepting an immediate loss of coverage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Microsoft\u2019s SAP functions are designed to support both ingestion methods during migration. Even so, the team should monitor for duplicate events and duplicate incidents while both connectors are active.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A simple Sentinel query can confirm that recent SAP audit records are arriving:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>let startTime = ago(1h);\nlet endTime = now();\nABAPAuditLog\n| where TimeGenerated between (startTime .. endTime)\n| summarize EventCount = count()\n by SourceSystem, bin(TimeGenerated, 5m)\n| order by TimeGenerated desc<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Receiving some records is not enough. Compare event volumes, source systems, timestamps, important log categories and collection delays against the old connector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Test the complete security process<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A technically healthy connector can still leave operational gaps. Trigger controlled test events and confirm that analytics rules generate the correct incidents, dashboards update, notifications reach the right people and automated playbooks complete successfully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This follows the same principle discussed in our guide to monitoring AI agent activity with Sentinel and OpenTelemetry: collecting data has limited value unless leaders can trust the complete path from activity to detection, investigation and response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Decommission carefully<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the agentless connector has operated reliably for an agreed validation period, stop the old connector and continue monitoring closely. Keep the migration records, test evidence and approvals needed for internal audit or compliance reviews.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then remove unused virtual machines, containers, credentials and network rules. Leaving the old infrastructure behind creates unnecessary cost and another system that someone must patch, monitor and secure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do not overlook cost and data governance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agentless model can remove the cost and effort of maintaining a dedicated collector. However, total cost also depends on SAP Integration Suite usage, polling frequency, Sentinel ingestion and log retention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polling more frequently can improve detection speed but increase message volumes and load. Polling too slowly can delay alerts or create a backlog. Test changes on one SAP system first, then measure collection delay, execution time and data volume before applying them more widely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SAP logs may also contain usernames, transaction details and other information linked to employees or customers. Access, retention and export settings should therefore reflect Australian privacy obligations and the organisation\u2019s own data-handling policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What a well-managed migration looks like<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consider a 200-person organisation with several SAP systems and a small internal security team. Its container agent appears healthy, but only one administrator understands the Linux host, credentials and update process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By moving early, the organisation can document its SAP log sources, deploy the agentless connector alongside the old collector and test its highest-risk alerts before the deadline. It also removes a lightly managed server and gives the security and SAP teams shared ownership of connector health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The business outcome is not simply \u201ca newer connector.\u201d It is continued threat detection, less infrastructure to maintain, clearer accountability and stronger evidence that critical financial and operational systems remain monitored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The deadline is close enough to act now<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 14 September 2026 retirement should be treated as a fixed operational deadline.
